Climate Justice in Himalaya

The Himalayan region faces intensifying climate impacts—melting glaciers, extreme weather, and biodiversity loss—that threaten both ecosystems and vulnerable communities. These challenges call for justice-driven legal frameworks that promote resilience and equity. This session explores how environmental and climate law can safeguard rights, support adaptation, and uphold sustainability in mountain regions. It highlights the role of formal legal systems, indigenous laws, and regional cooperation in addressing climate risks. The session aims to generate actionable insights connecting law, policy, and grassroots adaptation.

Objectives

  • Examine how legal frameworks can address climate vulnerabilities unique to the Himalayas.
  • Explore the role of courts, litigation, and environmental constitutionalism in promoting accountability.
  • Highlight the integration of indigenous legal systems and traditional knowledge in climate governance
  • Discuss innovative legal tools like rights-of-nature laws and transboundary cooperation for mountain sustainability.

Who should join

  • Environmental lawyers, judges, and legal scholars working on climate and ecological law.
  • Policymakers and legislators involved in climate adaptation, land use, and mountain development.
  • Indigenous leaders, civil society actors, and NGOs advocating for climate justice and local rights.
  • Students, researchers, and early-career professionals interested in environmental justice and law.
