About Himalaya Calling

The Himalayas — often called the “Third Pole” — are critical to India’s water security, biodiversity, and climate regulation. Yet, the region faces mounting sustainability challenges, including ecosystem degradation, unplanned development, declining traditional livelihoods, and increasing disaster risks. This session takes a holistic view of sustainability, examining how environmental, social, and economic dimensions intersect in the Himalayan context. With a focus on long-term resilience and balanced growth, the session will explore regional models, community practices, and policy innovations that address the Himalayan region’s unique vulnerabilities.

Objectives

  • To identify and assess key sustainability challenges specific to Himalayan geographies
  • To examine land-use pressures, tourism impacts, and urbanisation in fragile zones
  • To promote interdisciplinary approaches that balance development with conservation
  • To highlight community-led practices and policy interventions for sustainability
  • To facilitate knowledge-sharing on risk reduction, equity, and ecosystem health

Who Should Attend

  • Sustainability scholars and environmental scientists
  • Development practitioners and regional planners
  • Government officials and policymakers in mountain states
  • Students in environmental studies, economics, and governance
  • Civil society actors working in the Himalayan belt
