Mountain spring water flows over mossy rocks in the Himalayas.

In mountain settlements water security is the spring at the edge of the village, and whether it still runs in May. Springs feed drinking water, irrigation and the streams that reach the plains, so when one weakens the effect travels far downstream, arriving first in the households closest to it. This track takes up the science, engineering and community practice of protecting Himalayan water sources and bringing springs back to life, including low cost nature based approaches suited to fragile high altitude conditions.

What this track will do

• Understand the causes of spring decline and gaps in water management

• Showcase proven recharge, rejuvenation and water quality technologies

• Identify opportunities in water monitoring, treatment, storage and distribution

• Connect practitioners with water departments, funders and partners

• Develop community led, policy aligned models ready for implementation

What this track will produce

• A catalogue of spring and water security approaches for Himalayan conditions

• Candidate sites and communities for pilots

• Partnerships between researchers, departments and communities

• A one page roadmap for the summit outcome document

Who should join

Hydrologists and spring shed practitioners, water quality researchers, water technology

startups, state water departments and local bodies, community water groups, ecological

engineers, and young innovators.
